When it comes to bestselling fiction by women writers, trying to make the case that female readers may derive some empowerment from the reading of these works can mm into a rather uncomfortable task, particularly in the face of adverse canonic literary critique. Such texts are often met with blanket dismissal and branded with the derogatory label lite lit--used in relation to writing marked by status quo-affirming social and gender roles as well as unsophisticated narrative execution. Likewise, the women who read them are constructed with prejudice by the hegemonic establishment as "frivolous and/or inadequate readers," an assessment critiqued by Debra Castillo with respect to the realm of Latin American writing (160). Seen in this light, works of the sort in question would not be expected to encourage the articulation of standpoints of self-definition in women readers (see Collins 21-28), a shortcoming which would grant (or renew) the license of detractors to describe the engagement of these readers with popular literature in unproductive terms that equate reading with mindless consumption (cf. Radway). Among those contemporary Latin American women writers of bestselling fiction whose texts have been received with skepticism by those favoring the more radical destabilization of signs and disruption of meaning is Marcela Serrano. Boro in Santiago de Chile in 1951, Serrano has become a prolific voice in Chilean literature, publishing eight novels, a collection of two short stories, as well as a storybook for children co-authored with her daughter Margarita Maira Serrano, between 1991 and 2008. (1) In 1994, her novel Nosotras que nos queremos tanto won the Premio Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, awarded by the Guadalajara International Book Fair. Also in 1994, Para que no me olvides won the Premio Municipal de Literatura, awarded by the Municipality of Santiago de Chile, and in 2001, Lo que esta en mi corazon was the runner-up for the Premio Planeta ("Premios literarios"). Serrano enjoys a broad fan base not only domestically but also in other Spanish-speaking countries, particularly in Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, and Spain (Ossa Budge 54). In addition, a growing number of translations is making her writing accessible to readers of other languages. (2)
